The Auditor-General for the Federation (AuGF), Shaakaa Kanyitor Chira, FCNA, FCCrFA, FCCFI, FCTI, Ph.D., has advocated stronger collaboration among oversight institutions, anti-corruption agencies, the National Assembly and citizens to ensure that audit findings translate into concrete actions in the fight against corruption.
Speaking through the Director of Audit, Fawale Busayo Aiyinla, FCA, FCNA, FCTI, FCSA, FCCrFA, FCCFI, PGD (ML&AI), Ph.D. (Finance), at the commemoration of the 2026 African Union Anti-Corruption Day in Abuja, the Auditor-General stressed that effective collaboration among stakeholders remains critical to promoting transparency, accountability and good governance.
Chira noted that while the detection of financial infractions had improved over the years, meaningful accountability could only be achieved through the prompt implementation of audit recommendations and the application of appropriate sanctions where necessary.
Drawing from Audit findings, he observed that public sector audits continue to reveal weaknesses in internal controls, financial management and regulatory compliance, underscoring the need for stronger institutional oversight and sustained reforms in public financial management.
The Auditor-General called on the National Assembly to support the audit process through the timely consideration of audit reports and the implementation of their recommendations. He also urged anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to prioritise referrals arising from audit findings.
He further encouraged Nigerians to embrace integrity, support whistleblowing initiatives and play active roles in promoting accountability, noting that the fight against corruption requires the collective commitment of government institutions and citizens alike.
According to him, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption represents a shared commitment by African countries to build transparent, ethical and accountable societies anchored on integrity and the rule of law.
The Auditor-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation (OAuGF), Nigeria's Supreme Audit Institution, to safeguarding public resources through independent auditing, strengthening public financial management and promoting accountability in the management of public funds.
He emphasised that sustained collaboration, institutional integrity and adherence to audit recommendations remain essential to building public trust and advancing Nigeria's anti-corruption agenda.
"Integrity delayed is integrity denied. The future begins now," he stated.
