FG COMMITTED TO INDEPENDENCE OF AUDITOR-GENERAL’S OFFICE – TINUBU

The Auditor-General for the Federation (AuGF), S. K. Chira made a public presentation of a new strategic plan which sets out a four-year direction (2024-2028) of the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Nigeria also known as the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation (OAuGF) recently in Abuja.

This four-year plan outlines the onward priorities of the OAuGF and what actions will be taken to address these.  The plan sets out how the SAI can continue to provide an adequate level of Quality Assurance whilst articulating Accountability and Professionalism at its forefront.

The Strategic Plan is supported by the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI)which sets out the roles and responsibilities of Audit which outlines the audit work which will be undertaken each year and the Quality Assurance and Improvement which outlines the OAuGF’s development actions. In addition, the strategic plan explores innovative solutions to bridge the funding gap and transform the OAuGF.

This is even as the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Public Account, Hon. Bamidele Salam called on the federal government to allocate at least one per of the country’s annual budget to the office of the Auditor-General for the Federation.

President Tinubu, who was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, said one of his administration’s goals was to enhance the independence of the OAuGF and empower it to perform its mandate seamlessly, towards deterring and detecting corruption in public institutions.

“Nigeria must win the fight against corruption. It is an existential problem that requires that all hands are on deck, in collaboration to ensure success.

“This is to ensure that the resources of the nation are deployed for the well-being of the present generation without hindering the aspirations of future generations of Nigerians,” he said.

The AuGF, Shaakaa Chira, said the strategic plan was designed to contribute to the Federal Government’s agenda to stem the tide of corruption.

Chira said that the plan would achieve an enhanced independence and mandate of the OAuGF, and reduce mismanagement of public funds through stronger follow-up of audit recommendations.
