Nigeria and Namibia on Tuesday in Abuja signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation on performance auditing.
The agreement was signed by the Auditor-General of the Federation (AFG), Mr Samuel Ukura, and his Namibian counterpart, Mr Junias Kandjeke. Mr Ukura said that under the agreement, Namibia would train members of staff of his office and assist in building capacity in audit areas where Nigeria was deficient.
Before you get to level three of audit, you have to be proficient on performance and environmental auditing and the rest of that. We have agreed with our counterparts from Namibia to train and help build capacity in this area of performance auditing which is very essential. ’’
He said the agreement would also explore others areas of cooperation, including forensic and information technology auditing. The auditor-general expressed hope that the technical staff for the training would deliver on their mandate, having excelled in similar programmes in Ghana, Namibia and Uganda.
Kandjeke said the agreement would foster the objectives of the African Organisation of English-Speaking Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) where Nigeria and Namibia are members.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aim of the regional body is to improve relations among member countries in the field of public audit, in spite of their political, economic and social differences.
Kandjeke assured that his staff would put in their best for the training and expressed confidence that in the future both countries would conduct joint public audits.
